Athula Dassana Sri Lankan New Year Celebration 2025
April 12 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 pm

Celebrating the 2025 Sri Lankan New Year in the UK
The Sri Lankan New Year, also known as “Aluth Avurudu,” is a joyous occasion celebrated around mid-April. Unlike the Gregorian calendar New Year, its timing is determined by the transition of the sun from Pisces to Aries, marking the completion of the earth’s cycle around the sun. This celestial event is deeply rooted in Sri Lankan astrology and signifies new beginnings, prosperity, and harmony.
Time-Honoured Traditions and Customs
The lead-up to the Sri Lankan New Year is filled with various customs and practices to bring good fortune and foster community spirit. Households undergo thorough cleaning and renovations, symbolizing a fresh start. Families purchase new clothing in auspicious colours, carefully selected based on traditional astrological guidance. Honouring elders, lighting the hearth at the prescribed auspicious time, and engaging in the first work-related activity of the year are all integral aspects of the celebration.
A key highlight of the New Year festivities is the playing of traditional games. These games bring immense joy and promote unity and togetherness within the community. The atmosphere is filled with laughter, music, and a sense of collective well-being.
Our Centre’s New Year Celebration
For Sri Lankans living in the UK, celebrating this special occasion provides a wonderful opportunity to stay connected with their cultural heritage. Our Centre organises an annual New Year event, allowing Sri Lankans from across the region to unite in a spirit of festivity and tradition. This celebration is especially meaningful for younger generations born and raised in the UK, as it offers them a chance to immerse themselves in the rich customs of their ancestral homeland.

The event begins with the ceremonial playing of drums and traditional dance performances, setting the tone for a day filled with cultural pride. Attendees of all ages participate in traditional games, fostering camaraderie and a strong sense of belonging. Of course, no Sri Lankan celebration would be complete without an abundance of delectable Sri Lankan cuisine, offering everyone a chance to savour beloved festive dishes.
The highlight of the evening is a vibrant cultural show, featuring performances by children from our Dhamma School as well as their parents. This segment of the event showcases Sri Lanka’s artistic heritage through dance, music, and drama, keeping the traditions alive for future generations.
