London Elle Festival
Event organized by the Heathrow Athula Dassana Multi-Cultural Buddhist Community Centre,
The London Elle Festival is a unique cultural and sporting event organized by the Heathrow Athula Dassana Multi-Cultural Buddhist Community Centre. It brings the traditional Sri Lankan game of Elle to the UK. First held on August 25, 2012, at Little Harlington Playing Grounds, this festival marked a historic moment—the first-ever Elle tournament in the UK.
The Inaugural Event
Our first festival saw 12 male teams competing, with approximately 250 attendees enjoying the day. Beyond the thrilling matches, the event fostered a strong sense of community and cultural pride. Highlights of the festival included:
- Food stalls serving authentic Sri Lankan cuisine helped generate funds for our Centre.
- Children’s play areas, featuring a bouncy castle, games, and sweet stalls, ensuring fun for the whole family.
- A welcoming atmosphere, attracting both the Sri Lankan diaspora and the wider local community, sparking interest in this exciting traditional sport.
What is Elle?
Elle is a popular Sri Lankan bat-and-ball game, somewhat similar to baseball or rounders, but with its own unique set of rules and techniques. Until this festival, Elle had never been played in the UK. By introducing it here, we not only brought a beloved tradition to Sri Lankans living in the UK but also created an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and engagement with the wider British community.
Growing the Tradition
With the support of the Sri Lankan High Commission, which generously sponsored the Elle bats and balls, and the presence of Mr. H.M.K. Herath representing the High Commission, the festival gained significant recognition. Encouraged by its success, we aim to make the London Elle Festival an annual event, promoting Sri Lankan cultural heritage while strengthening bonds within and beyond the Sri Lankan community in the UK.
We look forward to expanding this festival in the coming years, inviting more teams, families, and supporters to experience the joy of Elle and the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable tradition and be part of a growing community festival that bridges cultures and generations!
