Sri Lankan Independence Day Celebration
Sri Lankan Independence Day Celebration at Athula Dassana International Buddhist Centre
Sri Lanka’s Independence Day, celebrated annually on 4th February, marks the nation’s liberation from British rule in 1948. Across Sri Lanka, this day is commemorated with grand cultural performances, military parades, and a presidential address.

At the Athula Dassana International Buddhist Centre, we honour this historic occasion with a cultural celebration, showcasing the rich heritage of Sri Lanka.
A Cultural Tribute by the Dhamma School
Our Dhamma School students take centre stage in a vibrant cultural show, fostering a deep connection to their Sri Lankan roots. This event provides them with valuable knowledge and experience, helping them appreciate the traditions of their ancestors.
The celebration features:
- Singing of the Sri Lankan National Anthem
- Traditional oil lamp lighting ceremony
- Cultural performances, including traditional dances from different regions of Sri Lanka
- A feast of authentic Sri Lankan delicacies

Distinguished Guests and Community Participation
Each year, we extend invitations to The Sri Lankan High Commissioner, The Mayor, and local Council Members, recognizing their role in strengthening cultural ties within our diverse community.
Preserving Heritage for Future Generations
Understanding one’s cultural heritage plays a crucial role in developing life skills, identity, and a sense of belonging. Through this Independence Day celebration, we aim to instill pride and appreciation in younger generations, ensuring that Sri Lanka’s traditions continue to flourish in the UK.
